Discord Server Rules Template 2026: Write Rules That Work

A ready-to-use Discord server rules template for 2026, plus guidance on writing rules that are clear, enforceable, and actually read by new members.

Rules are the foundation of a healthy Discord server. They're not about being controlling-they're about setting expectations.

Without clear rules, you'll spend all your moderation time dealing with ambiguous situations and arguing about what's fair. With good rules, your community knows what's acceptable and your mods know how to enforce consistently.

Here's a complete, copy-paste-ready template - then guidance on customizing it for your specific community.

Complete Discord Server Rules Template#

Copy this directly into a #rules channel:

πŸ“œ SERVER RULES

Welcome to our community. These rules help keep our server safe, inclusive, and fun for everyone. Breaking these rules may result in warnings, mutes, temporary bans, or permanent bans depending on severity.

1️⃣ Be Respectful Treat everyone with respect. No harassment, hate speech, bullying, or personal attacks. We disagree with ideas, not people. This includes no racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or discrimination of any kind.

2️⃣ No NSFW Content Don't post NSFW (Not Safe For Work) content, including sexual images/videos, extreme violence, gore, or explicit text. This applies to all channels, including DMs to members you met here. Artistic nudity may be allowed in designated channels - ask a mod.

3️⃣ No Spam Don't spam messages, emojis, images, or reactions. This includes excessive ALL CAPS, repeated messages, copypasta, and bot testing outside #bot-testing. Keep conversations readable.

4️⃣ No Self-Promotion Without Permission Don't advertise your server, stream, YouTube channel, products, or social media without moderator approval. This includes DM advertising to members. If you want to promote something, ask a mod first.

5️⃣ Keep Conversations in the Right Channels Use channels for their intended purpose. Check channel descriptions if unsure. Off-topic belongs in #off-topic, not in topic-specific channels. Help keep discussions organized.

6️⃣ No Doxxing or Sharing Personal Information Never share someone else's personal information (real name, address, phone number, photos, location, etc.) without explicit consent. Even joking about doxxing violates this rule.

7️⃣ Listen to Moderators Respect mod decisions during enforcement. If you disagree with a moderation action, appeal through mod mail or DM a mod respectfully - don't argue publicly. Repeated arguing with mods or admin may result in a ban.

8️⃣ No Illegal Activity or Dangerous Content Don't share illegal content, facilitate illegal activity, or share content that could cause harm (self-harm, suicide, dangerous challenges, etc.). This includes links to illegal services or instructions for dangerous activities.

Appeals: If you receive a punishment you disagree with, DM a moderator or message @ModMail with your appeal. We'll review and respond within 48 hours.

Why This Template Works#

Why 8 rules?

  • Few enough that people actually read them
  • Covers 95% of real moderation issues
  • Feels approachable, not intimidating

Why these specific rules?

  1. Be Respectful - Prevents personal attacks and discrimination
  2. No NSFW - Keeps the server family-friendly and legally safe
  3. No Spam - Prevents message floods and bot abuse
  4. No Self-Promo - Prevents the server becoming a spam board
  5. Right Channels - Keeps conversations organized
  6. No Doxxing - Prevents member safety issues
  7. Listen to Mods - Establishes mod authority
  8. No Illegal Activity - Covers legally dangerous content

These 8 catch 95% of real violations. The remaining 5% is context-dependent (handled by mods using judgment).

Customizing for Your Community#

The template above is generic. Customize it based on your server's focus:

For Gaming Communities, Add:#

No Spoilers Don't post spoilers for unreleased games, shows, movies, or books without warning. Use spoiler tags: ||spoiler text||. This applies to: game story spoilers, movie/show endings, book plot twists.

LFG/Trading Verification Don't trade in-game items, accounts, or services without using a trusted middleman. Report scammers to mods immediately with screenshots.

For Creative Communities, Add:#

Respect Intellectual Property Don't post other people's artwork, music, or writing without credit and permission. Credit the original creator and link to their profile.

Constructive Feedback Only Criticism is welcome, but it must be constructive and kind. "This is bad" isn't helpful. "I'd suggest improving X because Y" is.

For Professional/Work Communities, Add:#

Maintain Professionalism Keep conversations respectful and professional. Disagreements happen, but resolve them kindly and privately, not publicly.

No Recruiting/Poaching Don't recruit members to leave and join another community or project without mod approval.

For Educational Communities, Add:#

No Cheating/Academic Dishonesty Don't ask others to do your homework, exams, or assignments. Asking for help learning is okay; asking someone to do the work for you isn't.

Quality Discussion Keep questions and discussions substantive. Vague questions get ignored; clear, specific questions get answers.

Rule Writing Best Practices#

1. Be Specific, Not Vague

❌ Bad: "Be nice" βœ… Good: "No harassment, hate speech, bullying, or personal attacks"

Vague rules are unenforceable. "Be nice" means different things to different people. Specific rules are defensible.

2. State Consequences

❌ Bad: "No spam" βœ… Good: "No spam. Violations result in timeout, then mute, then ban if repeated."

People need to know the stakes.

3. Include an Appeal Process

"If you feel a punishment was unjust, appeal through [method]. We'll review within 48 hours."

This signals fairness and gives members recourse.

4. Keep Them Short

Each rule should be 1-3 sentences. A rule that takes a paragraph to explain is too complicated.

5. Use Clear Language

Avoid jargon. If you must use a term (NSFW, doxxing), define it: "NSFW (Not Safe For Work) content."

Enforcing Rules Consistently#

Rules without enforcement are just suggestions. Here's how to enforce fairly:

Escalation Ladder#

First Offense: Warning

  • DM the user explaining the violation
  • Example: "Hey, we don't allow self-promotion without mod approval. Please remove the link."
  • Keep it friendly. Most people don't realize they broke a rule.

Second Offense: Mute (1 hour to 1 day)

  • Timeout the user
  • DM them: "You've been muted for 1 hour for [violation]. It's your second warning. Please read #rules."

Third Offense: Longer Mute (1-7 days)

  • Extend the timeout
  • Consider a temp ban if it's severe

Severe/Repeated: Ban

  • Permanent or temporary ban depending on severity
  • Document the reason

Severe Violations (Immediate Action)#

  • Hate speech, threats, harassment: 7-day temp ban + warning, then permanent if repeated
  • Doxxing, real-name reveals: Immediate permanent ban
  • NSFW/Illegal content: Immediate permanent ban
  • Account impersonation: Immediate permanent ban

Document Everything#

Create a private #moderation-log channel where mods record every action:

User: @Username Violation: Self-promotion in #general Action: 1-hour mute Reason: First self-promo warning Mod: @ModName Date: 2026-02-26

This creates an audit trail. If a user appeals, you have a record of all prior actions.

Be Transparent#

When you enforce a rule, briefly explain why:

  • βœ… "Muting you for 1 hour - no spam in #general. Check #rules if unsure."
  • ❌ Silently timing out without explanation (confuses users)

Common Rules Mistakes#

Mistake 1: Too Many Rules

  • 20+ rules and nobody reads them
  • Fix: Start with 8 core rules. Add more only if needed.

Mistake 2: Rules Nobody Enforces

  • Rule says "no spoilers" but you never actually enforce it
  • Fix: Enforce consistently or remove the rule. Dead rules destroy trust.

Mistake 3: Enforcement Inconsistency

  • You mute someone for spam but not another person for the same thing
  • Fix: Use the escalation ladder. Document every action. Review decisions quarterly for bias.

Mistake 4: Unclear Consequences

  • Rules don't say what happens when broken
  • Fix: State escalation clearly (warning β†’ mute β†’ ban)

Mistake 5: No Appeals Process

  • Users feel punished unfairly with no recourse
  • Fix: Always allow appeals. Review within 48 hours. Be willing to overturn if the user makes a good case.

Where to Post Rules#

Option 1: #rules Channel (Recommended)#

  • Post the complete rules in a dedicated #rules channel
  • Pin the message
  • Require new members to read before accessing other channels
  • Pros: Always accessible, hard to miss
  • Cons: Requires role-gate to enforce

Option 2: Welcome Screen#

  • Add rules summary to Discord's Welcome Screen
  • Works for Community servers (100+ members)
  • Pros: First thing new members see
  • Cons: Limited space

Option 3: Server Description#

  • Put rules link in your server description
  • Pros: Visible on server card
  • Cons: Fewer people read it

Option 4: Bot Verification Gate#

  • Use a bot that requires members to react to rules before accessing channels
  • Pros: Confirms they've read it
  • Cons: Requires bot setup

Best practice: Use Option 1 (#rules channel) + require a reaction to proceed. Gives you proof members have read the rules.

Reviewing Your Rules#

Every 3 months:

  1. Review your mod logs - what violations are you actually enforcing?
  2. If you're never enforcing a rule, delete it
  3. If you're handling violations not covered by rules, add a rule
  4. Ask your mod team: "Are these rules working?"
  5. Update if needed

Living rules change as your community evolves. That's healthy.

Final Checklist#

Before posting your rules:

  • 8-12 rules (not more)
  • Each rule is 1-3 sentences
  • Consequences are stated
  • Appeal process is clear
  • Customized for your community
  • Tested with a secondary account
  • Pinned in #rules
  • Mentioned in welcome message

Clear, enforced rules are the foundation of a healthy community. Write them thoughtfully, enforce them consistently, and review them regularly. Your server will be stronger for it.
